The Matthias Kühn Foundation was established in 1999 with the objective to support the communication between native Mallorcans and other residents by means of cultural and social activities. The foundation supports, amongst others, artists who have further developed the exchange and the cultural diversity through their work since then.
Since its creation, the "Fundació" has achieved many remarkable things:
The Matthias Kühn Foundation also cooperates with the University of the Balearics and has participated in seminars and events regarding the uniquely fascinating culture of the Balearic Islands, especially for residents, but also together with Katheder Ramón Llull and the public university.
Inspired by the Leonard Bernstein motto "Let's make music as friends", Prof. Justus Franz decided to found the "Philharmonic Orchestra of the Nations", an orchestra with young musicians from 40 countries. This musical ensemble offered an unforgettable concert to an international audience in the Auditorium of Palma. The essential aspect of this project was: "Everybody in this orchestra is a foreigner...", because "...music is a language which connects everything...". This message was declared by Prof. Justus Franz to the enthusiastic audience.
The prestigious exhibitions of both contemporary Mallorcan and international art are also to be emphasized, they have played an important role, and have assisted in creating an excellent reputation for the foundation with their high quality pieces of art.
These art events have opened up the dialogue between the modern, partly avant-garde Mallorcan artists and the multinational artists either living in the Balearics or having been invited there. Well known artists like Gustavo, Joan Ramis Sineu, Erwin Bechthold, the Duchess Diane von Württemberg and many others have carried out exhibitions. Particularly for young, talented artists without any means, the foundation is regarded upon as a springboard for success.
Matthias Kühn has been honoured for his foundation merits by both the "Association of Fine Arts" (ADEBA) and the "International Club of Art Lovers".
